Hibah: Supporting Young Girls through Self-Defence

Alumni Hibah founded “Riyadah”, part of The Agency Southampton (produced by Energise Me)

Southampton Alumni Agent Hibah developed a project called Riyadah (formerly named Veil of Valour), focusing on helping girls to build confidence, independence and practical life skills through self-defence and personal development sessions.

Before joining The Agency, Hibah had become increasingly aware that many girls, particularly within her local community in SO14, did not always have access to opportunities that helped them develop confidence, independence and the skills needed to feel safe in their everyday lives. Drawing from the experiences that she and her family members feel vulnerable or unsafe in the area. She wanted to create something that would support younger girls and help them feel stronger, more confident and better equipped to navigate the challenges they might encounter.

When she joined The Agency, she saw an opportunity to turn that passion into action. Her project focused on creating a safe and supportive space where girls could learn self-defence alongside other valuable life skills. Through practical sessions, participants were encouraged to build confidence, develop resilience and connect with others in a positive environment. Bringing the project to life involved planning sessions, working with a coach, and learning how to transform an idea into a meaningful community initiative. While balancing the project alongside her studies and other responsibilities was sometimes challenging, the experience taught her valuable lessons in leadership, organisation, communication and resilience.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the journey was seeing the impact the sessions had on the girls who took part. Watching participants grow in confidence, learn new skills and connect with others reinforced why the project mattered.

"Being able to create something that benefits others in my community has been incredibly meaningful. The experience also gave me the confidence to take initiative and believe that young people can create real change when they are supported." - Hibah

Today, Hibah continues to develop the project and explore ways it can reach even more young people. The Agency played a significant role in helping her to realise that her ideas can become reality, and she have the ability to lead and create opportunities for others.

To anyone thinking about joining The Agency, Hibah said: "The Agency is an incredible opportunity to turn your ideas into action, develop valuable skills, and make a difference."
